Beautiful prose and a meandering story make this a strong audio title, maybe even more so than the print version of the novel. Jamie Glover's rich baritone infuses the detailed images with a sense of mystery and uncertainty. He gives voice to the angst of the main character, George, in a precise tone and controlled pace that reveals his personality as a American living in London. Glover’s vocal dexterity during the dialogue of the characters makes the conversations more realistic—including a raised voice for arguments. And he's one of the male narrators who can capably evoke female characters—without making them irritatingly high pitched.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
