Lauren Ezzo's performance gives that ambition a tantalizing pulse. Her breathy narration shifts convincingly between Selene's guarded ambition and the mirror-bound stranger's low, coaxing tone, giving the forbidden bargain at the story's center real tension. Ezzo handles the novel's vocabulary, including musical terminology with confident, unhurried enunciation, never stumbling over the jargon of L'Opéra du Magician. She plays with silence to build suspense, effectively luring listeners in.
