Christopher Lane's tone is relaxed and informative as he delivers the sobering facts that 91% of the seafood eaten by Americans is imported at the same time that American seafood exports are growing by leaps and bounds. American fishing has become tragically disconnected from the American fish eater, and author Paul Greenberg focuses on the New York oyster, Gulf Coast shrimp, and Alaska's wild salmon to make his case. Why do we export the incredibly nutritious Alaskan sockeye and eat much less healthy farmed salmon from Asia instead? Lane successfully incorporates Greenberg's careful optimism that we are learning the importance of maintaining salt marshes, looking for local marketing options, and questioning the "jobs" argument for an enormous copper mine that would destroy the salmon runs. It's an entertaining performance of an absorbing argument.

Few people have spent more hours observing wild wolves than the author of this unique nature memoir. Narrator Ryan Shaefer’s steady performance matches the author’s impactful yet emotionally subtle descriptions of wild spaces and the animals that inhabit them. McIntyre explains his decades-long evolution as a storyteller while teaching the public as a park ranger, naturalist, wolf researcher, and author. The audiobook is vivid and exciting when he talks about individual bears and wolves. However, he struggles to craft a compelling narrative out of his own life story. McIntyre ignores his own salient storytelling advice, describing his life chronologically as a list of facts, accomplishments, and job placements.

A fine environmental journalist, Moore captures the sublime—the return of the grand sandhill cranes—and the profane—locals who want to rid their land of red wolves and adopt the slogan, “Shoot, shovel, and shut up.” Moore’s meticulous research takes listeners from pre-colonial times to the present-day environmentalists, wildlife biologists, and organizations committed to the reintroduction of these iconic species. The Nature Conservancy garners high praise, as do those who believe in restoring grasslands, saving wetlands, and recapturing abandoned mines.
