First, this is not the movie story starring Robin Williams, though the idea of protecting a wounded king figure is central. In this case, the king is jazz pianist Sonny-Rett Payne from Brooklyn, and the protector is his family, which is itself in need of protection from family strife. Robin Miles is an intelligent and versatile narrator who convinces with her plethora of dialects, foreign and domestic, while her standard English speech is equally beautiful to listen to. Marshall's writing communicates an elegant and musical subtext (evocative of jazz itself), which Miles performs with confidence and clarity. This book was made for oral interpretation.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
