LOST HIGHWAY is the story of a banjo player in a country band. Though unabridged, it feels abridged as the carefully crafted story suddenly dissolves into a different one about the musician's son, who was wounded in Vietnam. Ross Ballard II is perfect as the talented Sapper Reeves. He not only portrays the singer in the novel, but also serves as the lead singer in a musical rendition of the fictional band's biggest hit, "Miranda." Look for more songs by other country performers, including The Stanley Brothers. Music lovers will enjoy the backstage view of the 1950s' music business. It would be great to see a sequel filling in the parts of the book that are glossed over.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
