Richard Dooling's WHITE MAN'S GRAVE was nominated for the National Book Award in 1994 in its printed incarnation. Here, narrated by the incomparable George Guidall, it's quite simply the best novel I've listened to, possibly ever. The story itself is a miracle of ingenious irony set in Indianapolis, U.S.A., and Sierra Leone, West Africa. In the campaign of an American, cutthroat bankruptcy lawyer to find his son in West Africa and in that young man's own generally gruesome adventures, Dooling conjures up the anthropological affinities between the two cultures with comic ferocity. The entire affair is raised to the sublime by George Guidall's virtuoso rendering of American Big Cheeses and, most especially, by his rendition of Krio, an African patois of sorts.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
