Richard Louv, a columnist for the San Diego Union-Tribune, presents a collection of observations and musings on the relationships that define community and family life. Gordon Thomson reads with simplicity and conviction, as if the words and sentiments were his own. Given the emotional content of many of the pieces, it would be easy for the reader to overreach and drag the book down into sentimentality. Thomson avoids that and with his quiet voice plays on the subtlety of the pieces to draw out themes that will resonate with many people. A little more separation between the individual pieces would help the listener, but this is a minor point.

Rodrigo Garcia narrates his brief but powerful memoir about the passing of his parents. His father was the literary giant Gabriel García Márquez. His mother, Mercedes Barcha, was also a giant--of their family. Garcia narrates the events of the months leading up to their deaths with tactical precision that can come across as emotionless. However, his reservation allows listeners to focus on the words and feelings of his mother, brother, and the plethora of people who paid tribute to his father. Fans of García Márquez will want to listen, of course, but anyone who has lost a family member will also want to hear this audiobook.
