DARK SPACE

Sometimes employing a pair of narrators to deliver an audiobook just makes sense. This crackling space thriller is a perfect example. Nicol Zanzarella voices recently demoted spy Corin Timony, along with the other characters who work at the multinational spook agency called The Bazaar, which is located on the lunar colony of New Destiny. Narrator Timothy Andrés Pabon animates pilot Jose Carilles and all those on the MOSAIC, an exploratory interstellar ship. When the two estranged friends discover a conspiracy, they struggle to unravel it. Bringing to life multinational characters from Earth and aliens across the universe gives Zanzarella and Pabon great opportunities to show off their chops. They expertly deliver a mix of accents and intonations that differentiate the many characters.

Kimberly Woods narrates an unsettling cosmic horror adventure. Sisilla is a young girl enhanced with implants travelling aboard a living ship. Her mission is to discover why a planet besieged by an implacable plague suddenly cuts off contact after a cure is found. Woods imbues 9-year-old Sisilla with youthful vitality. Her soft cadence clashes wonderfully with the vivid, disturbing body horror and violence. Woods keeps the story engaging even as it veers in unpredictable ways, and the horror aspects feel not only believable but vibrant. At times the narrative touches on surprising and uncomfortable social commentary, which Woods handles with gentleness.

    A captivating, if skin-crawling, performance.

Nancy Wu leads listeners through an interplanetary heist in a SF tale of queer pirates and childhood loss. On the planet Callisto, stories are owned by a generative AI conglomerate. Stories are watered down. Characters are one-dimensional. And storytellers like Kelli Reynolds are boxed into a singular style. When Kelli’s smuggler ex-boyfriend, Rowan, comes back into town requesting a favor, Kelli’s troubling past comes back to haunt her, and her narrow vision of storytelling gets blown wide open. Wu’s depiction of Kelli’s autism is compassionate and powerful, and she provides gender-expansive voices for various queer pirates.
