THE GOOD LIFE

LESSONS FROM THE WORLD'S LONGEST SCIENTIFIC STUDY OF HAPPINESS

The authors/narrators, who are mental health researchers and administrators, offer inspiring information that goes beyond scientific findings. Performing alternate chapters with vocal clarity and humanitarian intentions, they persuasively argue that strong personal relationships are essential for happiness and that such relationships can be started or re-energized at any stage of life. The study they oversee finds that people who don't prioritize connecting with others die younger and are more lonely, physically sick, and negative about their lives. One of the authors sounds earnest and pleasingly vulnerable; the other more self-contained and matter-of-fact. Both sound sensitive to the human condition, a trait that will allow their touching message to influence listeners who might be avoiding or underappreciating the value of meaningful relationships.

    IN TREES

    AN EXPLORATION

This sure-footed author is the perfect companion for a walk in the woods.

As he did in On Trails (2016), author and narrator Moor serves as companion, guide, and information source for a novel excursion into a familiar aspect of nature—in this case, trees. Moor begins by describing a tree he climbed as a boy. As an adult, he returns to climbing trees, making note of features of the human body ideal for tree-climbing and even engaging a climbing coach. The focus of subsequent chapters ranges from bonsai to sequoias, but a significant portion of the narrative takes place within the canopy of trees. Moor isn’t a trained narrator, but he connects well, and his natural style is a key part of his appeal.

This sure-footed author is the perfect companion for a walk in the woods.

      JOYFUL, ANYWAY

Listeners looking to examine joy from a faith-based perspective will find much to reflect on.

In this audiobook, Bowler poses the question, "What is joy?" Narrating her own work, she muses on this theme, discussing finding joy in the ordinary, the role of emotions, recapturing past joy, and the way her faith has shaped her interpretation and experience of joy. Bowler’s narration is down to earth as she talks about her experience battling Stage 4 cancer shortly after her mother's death. She also tackles big ideas about duty and obligation, shared emotion, toxic positivity, how to convert faith into something concretely good, the secret of miracles, and taking risks to achieve joy.

Listeners looking to examine joy from a faith-based perspective will find much to reflect on.
