L.J. Ganser's performance is almost jovial--his intonation accentuates the audiobook's accessibility. This is no dull biology lecture: The audiobook covers a fascinating overview of bones, which have the ability to rebuild without scarring. The material also captures fascinating points throughout history and casts an eye on the future of medical care. Historically, medical doctors looked down on surgeons, who were once seen as mere bone cutters; however, advances in treatment have had major consequences. In one instance, an orthopaedic surgeon is given a standing ovation after presenting his work. Meals sees a future in which synthetic bone replacements will be manufactured on demand and on site. A fascinating listening experience, which Ganser conveys with energy and spirit.

Dr. Plotkin is an ethnobotanist who recounts his experiences searching for new medications in the Amazon rain forest. He makes an impassioned plea for the world to stop destroying this irreplaceable resource. Since the author reads his own work, we can rely on the pronunciation of some unusual botanical terms; however, his voice (presumably not trained for performance) lacks the enthusiasm and fascination the words suggest. Furthermore, with no chapter references and few pauses between sections, transitions, such as the change of location from Ecuador to Massachusetts, are awkward.
