Primarily narrated by Soneela Nankani, this audiobook features contemporary teenagers Khayyam and Alexandre. Even though they come from different countries, the two work together to solve a historical mystery that centers on a handful of literary and artistic celebrities. Nankani expertly performs the contemporary characters, capturing both the American, French, and Indian Khayyam and the thoroughly Parisian Alexandre. Nankani decisively places the listener in current-day France. Her contemporary voices juxtapose well with narrator Leila Buck's poignant portrayals of nineteenth-century figures, most notably the teenaged courtesan, whose voice Buck infuses with deep emotion. This is an enjoyable story, and one is further entertained by Nankani's and Buck's performances.

Listeners follow Merry, the longbow girl, one of the best archers in her town. When she finds a magical portal in the forest that takes her back to sixteenth-century Wales, she must use her skills to win an archery contest in order to help her ancestors keep their land. While narrator Emily Wilden brings protagonist Merry to life with a rich Welsh accent, her narration seems uneven at times. All the period characters have accents that reflect the setting of the story and transport listeners to Wales. Listeners who enjoy historical fiction and a bit of fantasy will be charmed by this tale of determination, hope, and family.
