Frankie Corzo and Mark Sanderlin alternately narrate this innovative gothic thriller with a twist that involves South American mythology. Fleeing the city, 18-year-old Mavi accepts a teaching gig at the famed but haunted Vaccaro School in the south of Argentina. And then, a spirit named Angel possesses a young man in order to befriend her. Soon, they develop a friendship, but her uncovering of the school's secrets, along with Angel's revelations, forces her on a journey of self-discovery and liberation. Corzo's powerful voice and varied tone propel the suspenseful narrative. Sanderlin's voice is charming but could use stronger vocal characterizations to effectively portray a host of young characters. The story's anticlimactic ending is disappointing, but the work of both narrators redeems this audiobook.

Listeners follow Merry, the longbow girl, one of the best archers in her town. When she finds a magical portal in the forest that takes her back to sixteenth-century Wales, she must use her skills to win an archery contest in order to help her ancestors keep their land. While narrator Emily Wilden brings protagonist Merry to life with a rich Welsh accent, her narration seems uneven at times. All the period characters have accents that reflect the setting of the story and transport listeners to Wales. Listeners who enjoy historical fiction and a bit of fantasy will be charmed by this tale of determination, hope, and family.
