Taking place as flashbacks during a murder trial, this novel has its genesis in that intense and confounding era of political and personal change, the Sixties. As narrator Sonia Klonsky, a Superior Court judge, presides over the trial of Nile Eddgar, who is accused of engineering the murder of his mother, a ghetto activist, Turow takes on gang culture, judicial corruption, and radical political movements of the time. Characters are brought to life by Jack Garret, C.J. Critt, and L.J. Ganser. In unique and polished voices the three narrators move seamlessly from the lives inner city African-Americans to the depths of emotion surrounding the Vietnam War. Their delivery is penetrating and articulate, adopting a sober, analytical tone, even when describing intense emotional pain. The trial itself contains skillful twists and turns, which the readers deliver slowly, increasing their impact.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
