ABSENCE OF MERCY

A LIGHTNER AND LAW MYSTERY

This exciting audiobook, set in 1850s New York, follows Lord Jasper Lightner, Crimean War hero and distinguished London Metropolitan Police detective, as he is sent to the U.S. to help form a trained detective force. The moment he arrives in New York City, Jasper is thrust into the middle of violent street thugs and police corruption as he encounters the murdered body of reformer Stephen Finch. This mystery is turned into a thrilling audiobook by the deft handling of narrator Rupert Degas, who shifts into and out of regional accents with ease. Degas utilizes a strong sense of timing to increase the drama and keep listeners on the edge of their seats from start to finish.

Sneha Mathan, who has narrated several books in the Perveen Mistry detective series, sets a deliberate pace in the female lawyer’s latest adventure in 1920s Bombay. This time, Perveen acquires a film studio as a client, only to find a murdered guest at a movie screening. Mathan, who has a soothing, midrange voice, honors the author’s formal language with exquisite diction and an unrushed reading. While some may wish to increase the playback speed a bit, the pace gives listeners time to follow the complex plot. A few of the female characters sound confusingly similar, but that’s a quibble. In general, the international cast and disparate personalities are vivid.

Fans will be pleased with this colorful and fun addition to a popular series.
