This thriller’s tension never lets up thanks to Amoss’ attentive performance.
Listeners unearth a small town’s sordid past. After spending 10 years trying to escape the shadow of her father, infamous serial killer Gabriel Thorn, 17-year-old Ryan Shipley is forced back to Starling, Tennessee. Narrator Sophie Amoss captures Ryan’s guarded, cynical point of view with an uneasy detachment, while also populating Starling with a full range of Southern small-town folk and true-crime obsessives, all of whom are harboring secrets of their own. Amoss shifts convincingly among them and delivers a tense performance that keeps listeners on edge throughout.

An intriguing listen for fans of escape rooms and problem-solving.
This thriller follows a group of teens as they compete on a reality show where the goal is to escape using their wits and creative problem-solving abilities. Then one of the competitors turns up dead. The storyline alternates between the show’s present-day competition, when the players are trying to uncover the killer, and previous seasons. Keylor Leigh and Ryan Vincent Anderson split the narration duties—Anderson handles the flashbacks, while Leigh voices the characters in varying pitches and octaves—which works well. Leigh creates a sharp tone for one of the show’s handlers, an Australian accent for the host, and a cloying voice for a contestant’s overbearing mother.
