Narrator Karla Serrato is delightful as she adds humor and expressiveness to the turmoil of this coming-of-age story. Serrato’s youthful voice pairs perfectly with the range of emotions the characters experience. High school is hard, and Yamilet has it extra hard. So many things have gone wrong in her life. Most importantly, she hesitates to come out as queer. A light appears at the end of the tunnel when Yamilet meets Bo, who is confident and openly queer. Will Yamilet ever feel comfortable coming out? Will her family and friends accept her as she is? Serrato smoothly switches between English and Spanish when needed. She is the perfect voice for a Latinx teenager who will steal listeners’ hearts.

Listeners follow Merry, the longbow girl, one of the best archers in her town. When she finds a magical portal in the forest that takes her back to sixteenth-century Wales, she must use her skills to win an archery contest in order to help her ancestors keep their land. While narrator Emily Wilden brings protagonist Merry to life with a rich Welsh accent, her narration seems uneven at times. All the period characters have accents that reflect the setting of the story and transport listeners to Wales. Listeners who enjoy historical fiction and a bit of fantasy will be charmed by this tale of determination, hope, and family.
