This vintage Stephen King is as exciting now as it was 30 years ago when he wrote it. Even if you read it then, listen to this spectacular rendering from Dennis Boutsikaris—it recaptures all the excitement in a whole new way. Boutsikaris flawlessly delivers the atmosphere and pacing of which King is a true master. His narration perfectly portrays the struggles of 8-year-old Charlie McGee, who discovers she has mysterious pyrokinetic powers. (She can start a fire by thinking about it.) At the same time, Boutsikaris’s vocal rendering of the adults who vie to use Charlie’s power for good or for evil amplifies the drama. Boutsikaris’s delivery is a terrific example of the power of a clean narrative voice.

Eiden's lively tone gives Jack a subtle flair and confidence that make him easy to forgive and to love.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
