As the greater part of this story takes place during the two days Jessie is handcuffed to her bed--and by now everyone knows why--and as this 12-disc program is 13 hours long, it seems to take place in real time. That time goes by quickly indeed thanks to King's provocative, spooky plotting and actress Lindsay Crouse's enthusiasm, her skillful reading, and her facility with the voices in Jessie's head as she sorts out her traumatic past and finds the courage to survive. The few sound effects used to signal the beginning and the end of a disc and important shifts in action are appropriately eerie.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
