THE LAST SHIPS FROM HAMBURG

BUSINESS, RIVALRY, AND THE RACE TO SAVE RUSSIA'S JEWS ON THE EVE OF WORLD WAR I

Arthur Morey's pleasing baritone is a wonderful match for this account of the mass migration of Eastern European Jews to the New World. The whole journey involved many people and eventually became big business for bankers, shipping companies (including the White Star Line of TITANIC fame,) railroads, and charities/NGOs, such as the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS). I myself, along with so many others, am descended from ancestors who made this journey. This account is fascinating, and Morey's narration is splendid. He is appropriately expressive, pronounces words clearly, and has perfect pacing.

    OUT OF THE SKY

HEROISM AND REBIRTH IN NAZI EUROPE

Friedman’s powerful performance captures the solemnity and determination of an act of heroism that resonates in Israel...

Journalist Friedman narrates this detailed history of 23-year-old Hannah Senesh and those she accompanied on one of the most surprising military operations in World War II history. In 1944, a team of Jews that had escaped Nazi-occupied Europe parachuted back across enemy lines, and in the process, cemented into consciousness one of Israel’s most popular founding myths. Combining detailed journalism with the perfect pacing of a born storyteller, Friedman delivers the often heartbreaking facts of the team’s history and how one of Senesh’s poems became the beloved Hebrew song “Eli Eli.”

Friedman’s powerful performance captures the solemnity and determination of an act of heroism that resonates in Israel to this day.

      WHEN CAESAR WAS KING

HOW SID CAESAR REINVENTED AMERICAN COMEDY

With understated naturalism, Rob Shapiro introduces listeners to Sid Caesar, the first comic superstar of television. From 1949 to 1957, as many as 60 million viewers tuned in weekly to Caesar's inspired improvisational sketch comedy juggernauts, "Your Show of Shows" and "Caesar's Hour." Caesar's writers' room of protégés such as Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner, and Neil Simon went on to influence the entertainment world for close to 70 years. Shapiro's delivery reflects the author's emphatic, almost argumentative, opinion that even with his volatile temper, self-doubt, addictions, and professional burnout, Caesar should be fondly remembered. Who's forgetting? The rags-to-riches story of a Jewish boy from Yonkers practically inventing television comedy is the stuff of legend.
