Four exceptional narrators unfailingly capture the full relevance of every sentence and broad idea in this epic audiobook. With this monumental economic and social history, the author traces the growth of capitalism’s decisive impact on human society, from 15th-century traders to the invention of money and the seemingly unstoppable power of capital markets today. Beckert describes capitalism’s fraught relationship with forced and paid labor as it changed with advances in agriculture, transportation, industry, and political trends. Despite the idealized dream of free markets under capitalism, Beckert shows how it flourished only with the cooperation of governments that enforced the social and economic order necessary for wealth accumulation.

Highly engaging for a wide variety of listeners.

    AMONG THE PORCUPINES

Carol Matthau epitomizes a glamour and lifestyle not associated with the 1990's. Here is a life of privilege, tragedy and worry about what friends would think of her new frock or lover. Matthau possesses a voice and delivery that simply could not be improved on. In her coy whisper, she tells compelling stories involving everyone from William Saroyan (husband #1) and Truman Capote to Carson McCullers, Gloria Vanderbilt, and Walter Matthau (husband #2). This excellent audio presentation will leave you wanting to read the entire book to discover what juicy tidbits were left out.

Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster fought a lifelong battle for credit, recognition, and compensation. Superman gave birth to the superhero genre in 1938 and spawned comics, toys, television, and movies. Dustin Naylor’s narration is both exciting and faithful to the business of comics and contracts. The story involves organized crime and corruption that even Superman would have difficulty fighting. Author Bernhardt focuses mostly on Siegel, but both he and Shuster lived much of their lives in near-poverty, while DC Comics raked in millions for their creation. As the two men entered their golden years, new executives at DC were more appreciative and negotiated a fairer settlement.

      A fascinating examination.
