This novel is populated with a wide range of characters, and Adjoa Andoh infuses each with animation. She's especially good at giving the dialogue of each principal a unique tone, pitch, and pace. And she delivers the lilting Ghanaian-accented English with a light enough touch to make it reminiscent of real speech. For the listener who is used to a more restrained narration of literary fiction, this lively edition may seem overdone in some places. For others who enjoy more dramatic renderings, the moments of high drama--and there are many--are brought to life, complete with the sounds of tearful anguish or elevated volume. Overall, Andoh's narration is crisp, well paced, and engaging.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
