Narrator Kate Reading puts in another monstrously enjoyable performance in this Athena Club installment. Returning are all the main characters from the original—whom Reading ensures are quickly recognizable. Catherine Moreau, the main protagonist, tells the story with numerous mid-sentence interruptions from other characters: usually Diana Hyde, who is dissatisfied with her portrayal, and Mary Jekyll, the catalyst of Book 1, who is concerned that Catherine will turn off listeners with her continual promotion of that volume (“at bookshops everywhere”). Reading honors the story’s mainly lighthearted and charming tone, despite it being about the attempted rescue of one Lucinda Van Helsing, daughter of the famous vampire hunter from DRACULA. Reading keeps all the subplots and associated characters spinning toward the next installment.

Andrew Fallaize’s committed performance makes this twisty, creepy fantasy-mystery hard to turn off. Imperial investigators Din and Ana have traveled to the agricultural center of the Khanum Empire to dig into a disturbing death. It lands them in the middle of a feud between two powerful families, and Fallaize puts listeners squarely in Din’s point of view as he uses his biological enhancements to perfectly commit every suspect and clue to memory while managing the eccentric Ana. Fallaize breaks out a wide variety of British accents to believably portray each character, and he expertly enhances every moment of suspense, danger, and horror in this satisfying third installment in the series.
