A seemingly random act of kindness plunges stressed-out real estate agent John Felton into the twisted world of a recently released psychopath. In the tradition of the best movies of Hitchcock, Berger forces his “everyman” into an impossible moral situation and ratchets up the anxiety to an unbearable level. Narrator Bronson Pinchot masterfully aids and abets Berger’s ever-tightening noose of tension by adding a creepy sycophantic tone to the madman’s voice. While the first half drags a bit, Pinchot powers up the narrative in the second half, changing tempo and tone as the story moves to its chilling ending.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
