Finlay Robertson artfully brings to life the extraordinary autistic detective George Cross and his team as they tackle the puzzling murder of an innocuous tailor. When Billy’s body is found in a train toilet, Cross’ remarkable skills are required to determine who among countless suspects—including intimidating thugs and international operatives—would want to steal his suit. Cross frequently infuriates colleagues with his unbending personality, while his weekly organ practice personalizes and endears him to listeners. When Cross meets a serious challenge, the entire regional police force unites behind him. Espionage, the high stakes of technological innovation, and bespoke tailoring are all compelling. Robertson believably conveys both the painstaking, repetitious nature of police work and DC Cross’ flair.

Narrator Susan Ericksen transports the listener to 2060s New York City, where Lt. Eve Dallas is investigating the murder of scientist Larry Chu, who was found brutally beaten to death. The case takes Dallas to the secretive, power-hungry company that Chu worked for. As the longtime narrator of this long-running series, Ericksen has established voices for the main characters, and she’s just as skillful performing secondary characters. She brings a haughty arrogance to her portrayal of Chu’s employer. Dallas is aided in her investigation by her Irish husband, Roarke, for whom Ericksen adds a hint of Irish lilt.
