Franklin’s mystery is ostensibly about the disappearance of two girls 25 years apart and the man whose life has been ruined by the ostracizing of neighbors who believe he’s to blame. It’s also a finely crafted psychological portrait of two men of different races and their friendship as they grow up in rural Mississippi. Narrator Kevin Kenerly highlights Franklin’s wonderful use of language; without negatively impacting the pace of the story, he manages to make listeners feel they’re savoring each perfectly written sentence. Between Franklin’s writing and Kenerly’s narration, this story will not be easily forgotten.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
