Casey, a teacher who also helps her school's hockey team with administrative tasks, recruits former hockey star Kyle to coach the beleaguered team. In alternating chapters, Németh-Parker and DeMeritt seamlessly shift back and forth, slowly revealing Casey and Kyle's apprehensions as they reevaluate their feelings for each other. Like a haiku, the book brims with nature and surprises. Divided into seasons, the story is further segmented by vignettes featuring letters that customers request. Footman’s slow pace and contemplative tone reinforce Hatoko's characterization as a thoughtful assessor of people.
