Narrator Jim Frangione plays Carl just right--blunt, witty, pugnacious, wary, and sometimes not too bright--but you root for him just the same. In Lashner's latest, Carl is a prime suspect in the murder of his former lover's husband. As he dodges the cops, as well as Eastern-European gangsters, Carl and a former client form an unlikely but humorous investigation team. No matter what character Frangione is portraying, his interpretations are compelling and true to life. Sadly, at the end, the author announces that Carl will take the next couple of books off.
