NO SHAME, NO FEAR by Anna Turnbull
Released: Oct. 1, 2004

When 15-year-old Susanna offers to become a servant in town to help pay for her family's keep, she knows she isn't being self-sacrificing—her father's in jail for his Quaker beliefs, and Susanna, fearing that she lacks her parents' courage, longs for the company of Quakers her age. Will, a recent Oxford graduate and only son of an up-and-coming merchant, comes to the Quakers as he begins to question the values of his class-based society. As the Quakers suffer increasingly harsh penalties under Cromwell's laws, Susanna finds strength in rebellion and Will openly defies his furious, heart-broken father. Their young love seems as doomed as Romeo and Juliet's, and as far-reaching—but their emerging maturity provides a hopeful ending. Turnbull, in her first foray into YA literature, lets her strong characters carry the story, and the complexities of social order and religious persecution unfold gracefully. A tender, involving story, beautifully told. (Fiction. 12-15)Read full book review >
