MOUSE AND ELEPHANT by Matthias Hoppe
ANIMALS
Released: April 1, 1991

"(Picture book. 4-8)"
Nicole, a mouse, searches for a friend but is rejected everywhere; the cat sums it up best: ``We are too different to be friends.'' The pattern may be familiar, but the conclusion isn't: the elephant doesn't know what a friend is, but once Nicole has explained (``a friend is somebody you can count on...''), he points out that size is irrelevant—'we will tell each other our feelings and stick together.'' Didactic but pleasantly brisk; Lenica's bold, circus poster-style illustrations are fine for group sharing. Read full book review >
