Books by Joyce Raimondo

Released: Sept. 1, 2004

Raimondo presents five Impressionist artists to young readers via guided views of their work. Separate notes to adults and children provide background information about art in general and the Impressionists in particular. She gives Monet, Pissarro, Degas, Renoir, and Cassatt a section each, in which she features one special painting and poses specific questions to help the children experience and understand the piece. Several pages of hands-on activities follow, focusing on the artist's style, technique, or subject matter. Step-by-step illustrations accompany clear instructions, and suggestions for additional activities are illustrated with samples of the projects completed by young children. Backmatter also includes brief artist biographies. The layout of each section follows a consistent, logical pattern that is colorful and graphically interesting. The work succeeds on several levels: young readers can pore over it and attempt some of the projects on their own or as a parent-child activity, and teachers will also find much that is inspiring and useful. Well done. (Nonfiction. 7-12)Read full book review >
