Excited about corresponding with a pen pal from Australia, Laura is only momentarily disappointed that she must choose a boy. Getting a letter marked private and confidential is very exciting—at least until she learns that Malcolm cannot read or write directly to her, as he's nearly blind. Determined to find a way to communicate with him directly, Laura takes on the challenge of learning to read and write in Braille. Enlisting the assistance of a friend with a Braille typewriter, Laura is able to write a get-well card to Malcolm. A letter from Malcolm written in Braille and a Braille alphabet card allow readers to take up Laura's challenge as well. Smeary pastel illustrations rendered in rough strokes on textured paper add little to the informative introduction to visual impairment. A short history of Braille follows the text.
