THE GREEN LINE by Polly Farquharson
Released: Oct. 1, 2010

A refreshingly new look at a walk in the park relates in a child's voice all the important things a mother and child saw and did on their day out: "In the park…I ran and ran / and went roly-poly / all the way / down the hill!" From flora and fauna to the clouds and raindrops, the child describes things with the five senses, bringing readers along on the expedition. Farquharson provides close-up views of the things the duo see on their walk, her photographs beautiful and yet generic enough to seem familiar to most children. The titular green line runs across the pages, the child's contribution to the illustrations. The squiggle follows his/her actions, looping down the hill, shadowing the ladybird's leaf, forming a buttercup, mimicking the rings of raindrops landing in a puddle and hiding behind a tree during a game of hide and seek. The charming combination of mother and child enjoying the day and then writing and illustrating their journey is what brings this debut to the forefront. Here's hoping this will inspire many parents and children to follow suit. (Picture book. 4-7)Read full book review >
