BUILDING AN IGLOO by Ulli Steltzer
Released: Sept. 1, 1995

With only a saw and a knife for tools, Tookillkee and his son Jopee build an igloo. Like other Inuit they live in a house but still know how to construct the traditional shelter of their people and often use one when they are hunting. The igloo they build right in front of readers' eyes is a primal dwelling, an ur house of snow with a piece of ocean ice for a window. All children will yearn to go inside, spend the night, or better yet, have one of their own. Steltzer's black-and-white photographs are as straightforward as the process they portray. Sometimes the figures become silhouettes, and the snow looks as if it has a layer of soot on itpart of the challenge of taking pictures in the glaring light and extreme cold of the arctic. Despite that, Steltzer's text, photographs, and subject compel the imagination. (Picture book/nonfiction. 3-8) Read full book review >
