KIRKUS REVIEW

Millie, the delightfully different bovine star of Millie Waits for the Mail (2007), returns for another adventure, but this time she is helping the mail carrier instead of scaring him. Together they deliver letters and packages through deep snow on Christmas Eve day, and at day’s end Millie’s sent home with a box of handmade presents for everyone at her farm. Poor Millie loses her way in the snow, and in a hilarious sequence of slips and slides, she falls off a snow-covered roof and lands—kersplat!—in her own front yard, spilling the gifts everywhere. The droll final spread depicts all the farm animals and their presents, with Millie holding court in her new udder warmer, all four feet and her tail soaking in buckets of hot water. The tale offers dramatic pacing and a dry wit, but the illustrations, especially those of Millie in motion, are laugh-out-loud funny. Sharp-eyed children will delight in the antics of the other farm animals tucked away in the busy spreads, but “moo-velous” Millie in her woolen cap is the star of this show. (Picture book. 4-7)
