Seventeen-year-old slacker Shaun steps off the curb and is smacked by a cement-mixer truck. Just before he goes under, a curiously sneaky “archangel” named Kiriel steps into Shaun’s body. Thus begins Kiriel’s near doe-eyed exploration of all the weird, whacked-out wonders of teenage boyhood, all of which eventually coalesce into the pursuit of friendly, feisty Lane Henneberger, the girl he knows will give her virginity to him. The infusion of Kiriel’s inquisitively dogged personality into Shaun’s teenaged body humorously amplifies all of Shaun’s usual boy instincts: Lust, hunger and love all spring to the center, most affecting when Kiriel’s educated near-Shakespearean words spout forth from Shaun’s usually blunt and blasé lips. Life, of course, gets better for Shaun, complete with a girlfriend, help for his troubled brother and better grades. Jenkins’s writing, for all of her dabbling in the supernatural world, remains lean, mean and to-the-point. Though the replacement of a real boy with a do-gooder, lackadaisical demon makes this effort feel less directly urgent, less real than Beating Heart (2006), Kiriel’s own search for meaning and direction from his own realm in this new life packs an intriguingly deep wallop. A heart-wrenching, deftly executed end to this duology.
A new (and improved?) Nirrim settles in as queen in this follow-up to The Midnight Lie (2020).
The book opens with a brief recap of events in the previous volume: Nirrim traded her heart to the God of Thieves in exchange for lost knowledge and is still distraught over parting ways with her lover, Sid. Thanks to her transaction, the Half Kith, the oppressed people of Ethin, have recovered their memories of the truth about their island and regained the magic that the High Kith rulers had been siphoning from them. Nirrim, now without a heart, even more powerful, and seeking revenge, begins a violent onslaught against the High Kith and positions herself as queen. Meanwhile, readers are gifted chapters from Sid’s perspective, allowing the cocky, pressured heir of Herran a chance to relate her own struggles as her mother lies ill, possibly from poison. The sweet, hesitant heroine of the first installation is gone as Nirrim descends further into cruelty and violence, while Rutkoski exquisitely fleshes out Sid’s character and the nation of Herran, gently tackling themes of colonization and its legacy all the while. The elegant prose makes this a pleasurable read that will keep readers engrossed. In this world, characters are diverse in their appearances: Nirrim has black hair, green eyes, and brown skin; pale-skinned Sid has blond hair.

A charming cozy fantasy about defying expectations and finding love.
The lives of two Los Angeles girls inhabiting different universes intersect, proving that love knows no bounds.
Brenda Nguyen has a 19-step plan to save the world. Kat Woo is haunted by her legacy as the chosen one, a role she has no interest in. Brenda, working on an environmental science college scholarship application, stumbles into Sammy’s Coffee and Pick-Me-Ups, which Kat’s family owns. As the girls get to know each other, Brenda at last finds someone who’ll listen to her detailed plans, while Kat discovers she has something to look forward to. The girls, who alternate narrating the story, must defy the odds as their worlds begin to collide. As well as being a love story, this is an exploration of familial expectations: Kat is trying to outrun them, while Brenda is driven to fulfill hers. The girls, who are of Chinese and Vietnamese descent, respectively, complement each other: Brenda learns to live in the present, and Kat begins to look to the future. While there are pixie swarms and mana surges, the action takes a back seat to characterization. Lee’s fully developed parallel worlds are alike in many ways, although in Kat’s, you can buy teleportation spells at Target. The cast is rounded out by solid portrayals of the girls’ friends and family, who are important to the plot.
