KIRKUS REVIEW

In her debut, Stolls scores with some marvelously original characterizations in a funny and touching story. His new-age vegetarian parents have sent 13-year-old Calvin to therapists nearly all his life, while they neglect him. The shy, lonely boy travels from his Boston home to visit his pen pal in Walla Walla, Washington. Pen pal Rizzy turns out to be a tomboy girl in full-scale, howling rebellion against her volatile mother. Calvin tries to fit in with Rizzy’s large, loud family as he copes with his own fears, meeting some fun, quirky characters along the way. After stowing away in Rizzy’s grandfather’s car as he and his elderly new girlfriend joyride to Canada, both teens grow toward more confidence. Very funny and ultimately touching, this delivers for its target audience and should supply memories that won’t soon fade. (Fiction. 12-15)
