In the ``Planet Earth'' series, an introduction, from top to bottom, to the rain forest and its inhabitants--plant, animal, and (especially useful) human--discussing the forest's importance for food, medicine, genetic diversity, and maintaining the world climate. Goodman describes the causes and effects of deforestation, as well as efforts to live in harmony with the forests while also providing for indigenous peoples. Unusually clear color photos add to the appeal. Useful for school assignments and attractive for browsing. Scientific names of species, size information, and range are not given, but a metric conversion table is included. Index. (Nonfiction. 10+)
