Secret online gamer Serena Moore is devastated when her bad-girl best friend Kori dies in a car accident. To alleviate her grief, she decides to complete the “Tempting Fate” list Kori started in their social psych class. In doing so, she discovers the real reason that Kori suddenly decided to take her under her wing two years prior: Kori discovered Serena’s single mom was having an ongoing affair with Kori’s dad and wanted to “toughen up” the relatively innocent Serena before revealing that they were actually half sisters. Instead of exploring the more interesting angle of female gaming culture, debut author Taylor has simply penned another stereotypical adolescent-seeking-identity story, complete with dark family secrets and overly earnest musings about fate. Numerous subplots and a too-large cast of secondary characters slow the action and lessen the impact of the final climax. While the self-conscious prose depends heavily on soon-to-be dated pop-culture references, this title may serve as a stopgap for those teens waiting on the next Rachel Cohn. Not an essential purchase. (Fiction. YA)
