Health problems prevent Christine Caplan’s husband, Aklen, from working. Her son, Kenny, has dropped out of university. Only her daughter, Emma, seems to be on track. Already demoted from DCI to DI for mishandling evidence, Christine, who lands in more trouble when she’s accused of causing the death of a purse snatcher, suspects she’s being targeted. She’s supported only by her friend Lizzie, with whom she’s bonded over their dislike of “The Bastard,” Lizzie’s ex-husband and Christine’s ex-lover. When DCI Bob Oswald vanishes after viewing the scene of what seems to be mass murder, Christine is sent off to the Highlands to help with the shocking case. Two young troublemakers have broken into Otterburn House and come upon the long-dead bodies of five members of the wealthy McGregor family in a Satanist setting. One of the troublemakers is so traumatized that he has to be hospitalized. Christine doesn’t exactly get a warm welcome from the team led by DI Kinsella, who seems over his head and bent on proving the youngsters guilty. A search is launched for the renegade youngest McGregor son, now the only heir to a large fortune. He may be hiding on the island of Skone, which is owned by the liberal Allanach Foundation. A lot of Christine’s best information comes from disrespected local DC Craigo, but she quickly learns that she can’t trust her own colleagues when her investigation turns up both a drug operation and the body of the missing DCI.

Armstrong’s new twist on her Rockton franchise scores higher as wilderness adventure than as mystery.
The idealistic attempt to carve a new town out of the Yukon snow runs into criminal complications that threaten to reduce the tiny population to zero.
Det. Casey Butler has every reason to be deeply invested in Haven’s Rock. She and her husband, Rockton Sheriff Eric Dalton, have financed the new settlement, breaking away from the marginally more established refuge of Rockton, with money Casey inherited. Her eventful history with Rockton makes her eager for the new town, whose every resident will be hand-picked by Dalton and her, to succeed. So she’s alarmed to learn that three of those residents ignored the place’s paramount rule—don’t go into the forest—and only one of them returned. Yolanda the contractor, last spotted walking into the woods with Bruno the engineer, is back safe and sound, but finding Bruno will become the top priority of Casey and Dalton and their canine and human cohort. Soon after he’s rescued, Bruno goes AWOL from his hospital bed without more than hinting at what happened in the forest, and this time he turns up dead. Even worse, Penny, the architect who followed Yolanda and Bruno when she first saw them walking away from the town in progress, remains missing, presumed dead—until Casey and Dalton find a dead woman who turns out to be Denise, the second wife of Mark, a prospective resident who’s on a secret mission of his own. Few readers will be able to name any of the suspects an hour after putting this spinoff down, but they’ll still be shivering with cold.

Mystery and horror mix in a creepy novel whose suspenseful ending hints at a very special sequel.
In an insular town in Northern Minnesota, a series of crimes stretches two Bureau of Criminal Apprehension agents to their limits.
Harry Steinbeck is a rigid forensic scientist whose partner, Evangeline Reed, is intuitive and tends to bend rules. Both have pasts that haunt them. When Harry was a teenager, his sister vanished and was never found; Van grew up in a cult run by a charismatic grifter with an iron hand. Their latest assignment involves a cold case that’s turned hot since a body was found with a crushed skull and shotgun wounds—just like the earlier victims. Back in 1998, the entire Korhonen family was murdered while they slept in the town of Alku, where all the villagers are descendants of Finns originally driven out of their country under suspicion of witchcraft. Almost everyone in town works at the Carlton County Treatment Center, originally a hospital, then a psychiatric institution, and now basically a nursing home for serial killers. The dead man, Peter Weiss, was a nurse there. Harry usually avoids Duluth, where his mother still lives, because he blames himself for never having found his sister. The new, or old, case just adds to his guilt and stress. All the Alku families bear a strange resemblance to one another. That includes head psychiatrist Pekka Tervo, who’s married to a dead ringer for Nurse Ratched, and who can’t admit that the old and new cases are connected. The adult residents of Alku are keeping their secrets so closely guarded that only their children can help Harry and Van find the truth.
