An up-and-coming actress risks her career to find a missing woman, discovering the dark side of Hollywood's glamour along the way.
Coming off a big film role and an unexpected breakup, British actress Mia Eliot heads to Los Angeles for pilot season and a string of big-name auditions. While she's waiting for her second reading, she starts chatting with Emily, a fellow actress who's up for the same part. When Emily is called in to audition, she's worried that her parking meter is about to expire, and Mia offers to run outside and feed the meter for her. When Mia gets back, however, Emily is gone—leaving her keys and wallet behind. Mia's desire to see the items safely returned sets off a hunt for the missing woman, taking Mia's focus away from work at a critical time in her career. Despite an engaging central mystery—what happened to Emily?—the rest of the novel doesn't hold up. Mia has a frustrating lack of complexity; all her auditions become opportunities, and she's inexplicably naïve. Supposedly an experienced actress, she reads like someone plucked from the street and dropped into Hollywood’s orbit, and her constant surprise at the excessive luxury heaped upon her is grating. Her involvement with Emily—a woman she met once, for a few minutes—makes little sense, and the reveal at the end only makes it more implausible. The novel's consideration of Hollywood's dangers isn't unusual enough to be interesting, and the consideration of the gender dynamics of power is too clichéd to be thought-provoking.

A middle-aged woman channels her best Miss Marple when she finds herself facing a nightmare from her past as she seeks to make sense of her present.
Jane Trevally is at a crossroads of sorts. After a traumatic childhood, she sought safety and solace in marriages with wealthy men. Now twice divorced and living with her four dogs in the crumbling English country mansion that is her birthright, she’s feeling the need to do something, to take a job, when one day a runaway dog turns up on her doorstep. The dog is chipped, and with the help of a local vet and her loyal stepson, Dexter Lombardi, Jane traces the dog’s home to the edge of Hampstead Heath, in London—a place that brings back the memory of a terrifying night from her youth, when a handsome man picked her up and took her back to this very house. Everything there felt wrong; she just managed to escape, certain that if she had stayed, she would have died that night. Now, soon after knocking on the door and returning the dog, she discovers that he had run away from an Airbnb near her house, where he had been staying with a young woman who seems to have disappeared. With the help of Dexter; his father, Tony, her second ex-husband; Tony’s former security enforcer, Tobias Wilson; and her own gift for connecting with people, Jane sets out to find the woman, taking her first steps on the path to becoming a private investigator. While Jane serves as the heart of the novel, Jewell also narrates chapters from several other characters’ points of view, all of which chip away at the horror that is the house on the Heath. By slowly revealing past and present simultaneously, Jewell keeps the mystery fresh as she plays with Gothic tropes and the timeless imagery of “a house of horrors” embodying human sin. She doesn’t flinch from exploring the depths of depravity in this house—and its humans.

No sooner has Julia, seized by a sudden urge to phone her best friend, Courtney Horan, had a shattering vision than Courtney, still on the line, discovers the body of her grandmother, Kay Patterson, shot to death in her home in rural Pennsylvania. Naturally, Julia drops everything and books a flight to Courtney’s side. Who on earth would want to kill a Black octogenarian widely loved for her kindness and charity? Once the police find the presumed murder weapon—a ghost gun produced by a 3D printer—in the woods outside Kay’s house, they suspect Courtney, and Julia suspects the police. When homicide detective William Kowalski arrests Courtney, Julia decides his case is so weak that he must be racist or corrupt rather than just stupid; the only question is how far in the department the rot has spread. Back in Italy, there’s another emergency: Julia’s husband, library director Gianluca Moretti, is suspected of child abuse when their 3-year-old daughter, Leni, lapses into a mysterious grief and begs Julia to come back. But Julia, who’s already begun to suspect that Leni may have inherited some of her psychic powers, refuses and resolves to stay the course. Readers impatient with the endless wind-down of the mystery of Kay’s murder, which turns out to be the tip of a vast terrorist conspiracy, will be relieved to learn that the accusations against Gianluca are wrapped up with all due haste. The result is an ambitious whodunit, a less satisfying cold case, and a domestic drama so familiar it’s practically heartwarming.
