A dark romance that will keep readers guessing.
Debut authors Christie Santo and Jeff Santo offer a noir love story full of suspicion, presumption, and skepticism.
The story begins in a busy Las Vegas casino, and the authors immediately set a dark tone as they introduce readers to Carney, the acne-scarred son of a Hollywood movie star, who’s living solo in Los Angeles and struggling to have his own screenwriting work recognized. At the blackjack table, he meets the devastatingly attractive Prudencia “Pru” Romidi, who’s an untidy arrangement of contradictions: She’s capable and naïve; forthright and deceptive; and both a force to be reckoned with and in desperate need of help. The two cagily begin a relationship despite Pru’s reluctance to reveal details of her past. She seems to live in her car, but she also stays at a mansion owned by the smarmy, unlikable Doug; later, she’s sourcing painkillers from new friend Mona, who has no fixed address. She’s also had a string of relationships in which her partner has ended up dead. Still, Carney is seized by a desire to “rescue” her, as she inspires him to write with renewed passion. After she has a motorcycle accident, she moves into Carney’s house and life, although what’s real and what’s a game in their relationship keeps the characters—and readers—second-guessing their motives and behaviors. The novel consistently explores themes often found in noir tales, contemplating such concepts as luck, gamesmanship, and performing to a type. It also addresses the question of whether love can thrive where moral ambiguity and flaws abound. Throughout, the characters are effectively shown to be pessimistic and uncertain about their own selves—and completely in the dark about everyone else. However, the tale has a tendency to flow from the perspective of one character to another too quickly.

Good friends, good food, and a murder combine in a delightful holiday cozy.
The Seaside Knitters become enmeshed in a murder whose suspects are mostly their friends and neighbors.
The wise Birdie Favazza leads a group of friends and amateur sleuths that includes lobster company owner Cass Halloran Brandley, Yarn studio maven Izzy Perry, and Izzy's aunt, Nell Endicott, all aided and abetted by their husbands. Expectations rise when Oliver Bishop, the husband of Nell’s dearest college friend, who died from cancer, comes to town with his second wife, celebrated chef Lidia Carson. Alas, their visit doesn’t go as planned. Lidia, who’s been hired to cater the mayor’s Christmas party, has brought most of her own crew with her. She promptly raises eyebrows when she attempts to buy the Ocean’s Edge restaurant, a town treasure with an amazing ocean view. The owner’s not interested, but he has several investors who might be, though their number doesn’t include Birdie, the first investor Lidia approaches. In the meantime, there’s a peeping Tom on Cass’ street, and without warning, Molly Flannigan, Cass' perfect nanny/housekeeper, vanishes. The mayor’s party is lovely, and the food Lidia provides is amazing, but things look worse in the kitchen, where new arguments are breaking out every minute. After Nell discovers Lidia dead in a snowdrift in the mayor’s yard, a little snooping into her background reveals a long list of people who may have wished her dead. Sadly, most of them are liked and respected by the sleuths, who nevertheless resolve to track down every clue necessary to find the culprit.

A melding of Amish culture with a traditional cozy, with a cute goat to boot.
Amish and English worlds collide when the murder of a quilt competition judge places a possible witness in danger.
Millie Fisher and her closest friend, Lois Henry, are like chalk and cheese. But somehow the pairing of the Amish matchmaker and her purple-spiked-haired best friend works, maybe because the two share the same sense of justice in a sometimes troubled world. Though Millie is close to God and her Amish community, her penchant for solving mysteries means that she’s allowed certain modern affordances, like a phone line, that help keep her safe in her informal investigations. And investigations always seem to find Millie and Lois. The latest is the murder of Tara Barron, the difficult head judge of the local fair’s quilt competition, a competition in which Millie has entered a beautiful wedding-ring quilt. Millie knows that murder doesn’t discriminate among communities, so she and Lois use their separate connections to find a potential motive, while Lois tries not to get sidetracked by her own potential love matches. Being 68 makes Lois even more keenly aware of her desire for a partner, whereas Millie’s age and experience as a widow makes her nervous about finding a new man, even though Lois keeps pointing out that their longtime friend Uriah Schrock is interested in Millie as a match. As the investigation into Tara’s death intensifies, Millie meets Zach Troyer, a young Amish boy, and his beloved Pygmy goat, Scooter, whose presence at the fair may make them valuable witnesses to the crime—so long as Millie can keep them safe long enough for Zach to tell his story.
