In this ninth installment of a mystery series, nefarious doings are afoot at Merrill Manor, a boardinghouse on the grounds of the Chautauqua Institution, western New York state’s unique summer artist community.
It is a tranquil Sunday in mid-July 2021, and Chautauquans are enjoying the freedom of in-person activities after last year’s Covid-19 restrictions. Then a cryptic invitation in the local e-zine, The Grapevine, causes a flurry of excitement: “A Murder Is Announced,” to be held at Merrill Manor that very evening. Not even the manor’s new owner, former Wall Streeter Betsy Kowalski, knows who placed the ad or what it refers to. Nonetheless, she prudently makes the appropriate preparations to welcome a larger than usual crowd for evening refreshments. As night falls, the manor’s eclectic residents—Kitty Nowak, Betsy’s childhood friend; Matilda Willoughby and her older mother, Evelyn, Betsy’s cousins; Frank Paddington and his sister, Amanda; and Sandy Bianchi, the Chautauqua gardener—gather. They are joined by neighbors Bridget Gallagher; her 20-something son, Eric; and retired Judge Jeremiah Hammerle and his third wife, Agnes. Last to arrive is Mimi Goldman, Chautauqua’s own amateur supersleuth. As the guests chat and sip their drinks, the lights go out. The front door opens, and a man steps into the pitch darkness yelling, “Stick ’em up.” Three gunshots follow, and Betsy’s ear is grazed by a bullet. But it is the mysterious intruder who lies dead in the entranceway. He is just the first victim in Pines’ low-action yet intriguingly complicated, twisty tale of greed and deception. The shadow of ever present danger is lightened by skillful, frequently witty dialogue and a couple of charming love stories. The challenge of finding the killer among a trove of suspects is only part of the enjoyment of the author’s crime dramas. She has filled these pages with an assortment of quirky characters of all ages. And the narrative is peppered with pieces of Chautauqua history, evocative descriptions of the serene (and manicured) landscape, and samples of the institution’s annual philosophical/religious/scientific lecture series. This year, the series is focusing on the nature and development of individual identities, a subject conveniently connected to the ultimate reveal of the killer.

The lavish food descriptions and appended recipes are the best parts of this anemic mystery.
Christmas is coming, but so is trouble for South Lick, Indiana.
Robbie Jordan, owner and chief cook at Pans ’N Pancakes, returns from solving a murder in California just in time for the holiday rush, which is complicated more than most Christmastimes by a number of surprises that disrupt her circle of friends. First, her assistant, Danna Beedle, gets a visit from Marcus Vandemere, a young biracial man claiming to be her half brother, an assertion that thrills Danna despite the doubts of some friends and relatives. Next comes a fire that nearly destroys the home of anesthesiologist Dr. William Geller, a racist whose wife, Tina, reportedly left him years ago. When a skeleton turns up in the attic, the not-so-esteemed doctor has some explaining to do. Robbie’s nemesis, Detective Octavia Slade, who recently married Robbie’s former boyfriend, is more willing than usual to accept help from Robbie, who has a knack for finding things out. The next to die is Tina’s twin, Toni, who knew Marcus from karate classes. Toni’s husband is the prime suspect, but Robbie’s convinced the fatalities are connected. With help from her boyfriend and her network of friends, she attempts to clear things up before the killer spoils her holiday by adding her to his list.

Demands a careful reading and knowledge of the Victorian lady detective’s history.
A mystery that unwinds in reverse adds new twists to Thomas’ Sherlock Holmes–inspired series.
The new Charlotte Holmes novel continues the tense chess game that the gender-flipped Sherlock is playing with Moriarty and an incarcerated acquaintance turned villain. The events are narrated as a series of flashbacks interspersed with an interrogation in which Charlotte is under suspicion of murder. While her friend Inspector Treadles nervously observes, a senior policeman grills the unflappable detective about her recent movements. Even as she gives him a bland account of why she’s crisscrossed the English Channel in recent weeks, readers get drips of information about what she and her family and friends have been up to, all building to a reveal. Two other seemingly unrelated mystery subplots enter the picture, but it’s evident that new events and characters are connected to familiar ones from the past. With allusions to previous novels in the Lady Sherlock series and hat tips to Arthur Conan Doyle’s “The Final Problem” and the Guy Ritchie movie Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, the plot can be hard to follow, especially for new readers. The consistently well-drawn characters serve as an anchor, and the occasional glimpse of Charlotte’s love for her family and her lover, Lord Ingram Ashburton, adds a needed touch of warmth to the clever but clinical jigsaw structure of the mystery.
