Growing up in the backwoods of Rangeley, New York, Evie Quimby, has been raised to trap, fish, and hunt—and to be resourceful and wary. Her adoptive parents are known as the town hippies. One night in 2001, when she's 17, Evie narrowly escapes being molested by a group of local slackers when Lulu Mannheim intervenes. Lulu owns Valhalla, a mansion on acres of pristine Sister Lakes property. The two women form an unlikely friendship, and Evie first sees Lulu’s attorney, Win Langley, as an avuncular, mentoring figure. But readers know, from an earlier chapter, that Win is a sociopath—apparently it’s his mother’s fault—who was groomed by Porter Moran, an older Wall Street investment banker who hires only handsome young men without scruples. Moran and Langley have recruited a number of other morally challenged males to join the exclusive Mohawk Club, whose lodge and acreage adjoins Lulu’s property. The group style themselves as the Lost Boys. Lulu’s fiance, Charlie, a Langley protégé, turns up dead, wearing Lulu’s wedding dress. Although she has every reason to suspect Langley in Charlie’s “suicide,” Evie, incredibly, trusts him. That trust is shattered when, under the guise of encouraging her nascent art-restoration career, Langley drugs and rapes her. But Langley, with his sexual proclivities, is an outlier—the Lost Boys’ main mission is financial, though the details of their shenanigans remain frustratingly opaque. Seventeen years later, Evie’s quest to find a bone-marrow donor for her cancer-stricken 14-year-old daughter Chloé precipitates dizzying complications. We’re soon in high-concept thriller territory with only glancing nods to subtext. Evie is a well-rounded, fully motivated character, but Lulu is a stereotypical good rich girl, and the Lost Boys are one-dimensional scoundrels.

Sonia’s grandfather, the lawyer, and his friend, the Colonel, are connected by a weekly chess game and a local tradition of families sharing food, “paraded through the neighborhood in tiffin carriers, in thermos flasks, upon plates covered in napkins tied in rabbit ears.” Shortly after Desai’s magnificent third novel opens, the two families are also connected by a marriage proposal. Upon hearing that Sonia is feeling lonely at college in Vermont—loneliness? Is there anything more un-Indian?—and unaware that she is romantically involved with a famous, much older painter, her elders deliver a hilariously lukewarm letter proposing that she be introduced to Sonny, the Colonel’s grandson. Sonny is living in New York working as a copy editor at The Associated Press, and he, too, has a partner no one knows about. Sonny’s family feels they are being asked to give up their son to balance out some long-ago bad investment advice from the Colonel; on the other hand, they would very much like to get the other family’s kebab recipe. The fate of this half-hearted setup unfurls over many years and almost 700 delicious pages that the author has apparently been working on since the publication of The Inheritance of Loss (2006), which won the Booker Prize and National Book Critics Circle Award. You can almost feel the decades passing as the novel becomes increasingly concerned with the process of novel-writing; toward the end, Sonia can’t stop thinking about whether, if she writes all the stories she knows, “these stories [would] intersect and make a book? How would they hold together?” Desai’s trust in her own process pays off, as vignettes of just a page or two (Sonia’s head-spinning tour of a museum with the great artist; Sonny’s lightning-strike theory that only people who have cleaned their own toilet can appreciate reading novels) intersect with the novel’s central obsessions—love, family, writing, the role of the U.S. in the Indian imagination, the dangers faced by a woman on her own—and come to a perfectly satisfying close.

The narration of the increasingly unrealistic events that follow is interwoven with excerpts from Alicia's diary. Ah, yes, the old interwoven diary trick. When you read Alicia's diary you'll conclude the woman could well have been a novelist instead of a painter because it contains page after page of detailed dialogue, scenes, and conversations quite unlike those in any journal you've ever seen. " 'What's the matter?' 'I can't talk about it on the phone, I need to see you.' 'It's just—I'm not sure I can make it up to Cambridge at the minute.' 'I'll come to you. This afternoon. Okay?' Something in Paul's voice made me agree without thinking about it. He sounded desperate. 'Okay. Are you sure you can't tell me about it now?' 'I'll see you later.' Paul hung up." Wouldn't all this appear in a diary as "Paul wouldn't tell me what was wrong"? An even more improbable entry is the one that pins the tail on the killer. While much of the book is clumsy, contrived, and silly, it is while reading passages of the diary that one may actually find oneself laughing out loud.
