A young college grad deals with new experiences in love and labor in Roberts’ novel.
As this book opens, Denise feels like she’s at rock bottom. Two weeks earlier, she’d graduated college with a degree in English, a few awards for her fiction, nonfiction, and poetry writing, and a mountain of student loan debt waiting to crash down on her. After a depressing round of job interviews, she’s had no luck finding work, and to make matters worse, her comfortable (and free) living arrangement with her parents is about to end, as they’re taking early admission to a retirement community. Denise shares her frustrations with her close friends Emma, Claire, and Stephanie (“we were less Sex in the City and more Restless in a Podunk Town,” Denise narrates). On a lark, she answers an ad for a job as a dogsitter. She soon meets the greyhounds’ wealthy owners, Mitchell and Ruth (“she looked like a politician's wife, always ready to greet someone important”), and the dogs themselves—pampered greyhounds named Pepper and Dante. The interview goes well, and suddenly things are looking up: She has a new job (albeit with eccentric bosses), a new sense of purpose, and even a tentative new love interest: a handsome, funny man named Logan, whom she and her friends meet during a night out. Over the course of this novel, Roberts grounds her story in a light, breezy tone, giving Denise quite a few jokes in which she comments on her own haplessness: “I was about to dig deeper into that statement, when I saw a small glob of sauce at the bottom of my hair,” goes one such passage while dining with Logan. “Seriously?” Roberts manages to maintain this snappy, effervescent tone throughout the narrative, even when it turns into something more complex and, at times, darker than an average rom-com-with-dogs tale. The attention that Roberts gives to secondary characters is especially gratifying, and it gives the entire novel a pleasingly well-populated feel.

It's hard to read but hard to look away from.
When two women who share a birthday meet, a journalist becomes the subject of her own true-crime mystery.
On their 45th birthdays, Josie Fair and Alix Summer meet at a pub and discover they were born not only on the same day, but in the same hospital. Alix is a successful journalist, and Josie convinces Alix that her story is worth telling: Josie met her husband when she was 13 and he was 40. “I can see that maybe I was being used, that maybe I was even being groomed?” she confesses to Alix. “But that feeling of being powerful, right at the start, when I was still in control. I miss that sometimes. I really do. And what I’d like, more than anything, is to get it back.” From this premise Alix creates a Netflix series, Hi! I’m Your Birthday Twin! which investigates Josie’s life as she reconciles what happened to her as a teen and seeks a new path. With the story unfinished, the narrative unfolds in the present tense, with prose that jingles like song lyrics: “He turns to see if the girl is behind him, and sees her wishy-washy, wavy-wavy, in double vision through the glass windows of the hotel.” Alix is both intrigued and repulsed by Josie, but she initially gives her the benefit of the doubt. After all, Alix’s husband, Nathan, has a drinking problem, and Alix knows what it’s like to be reluctant to leave a bad situation. But Josie seems more interested in being part of Alix’s seemingly glamorous life than she is in fixing her own, and when three people end up dead and Alix’s life is turned upside down, the evidence points to Josie—and turns the TV series into a murder mystery. Transcripts from Alix’s interviews alternate with the narrative, offering increasingly varied perspectives on Josie’s story as told by her neighbors, friends, and family members. With so many versions of events, the ending shatters, leaving readers to decide whose is the truth.

The mystery plot and the Italian idyl both play supporting roles in this fairy tale for grownups.
Scottoline’s latest links her great love of Italy with her long record of female-centered crime fiction.
Julia Pritzker has a presentiment that something terrible is around the corner, but she never imagines just how terrible: When her husband, Philadelphia attorney Mike Shallette, tries to protect her from a man who grabs her designer bag, he gets stabbed to death before her eyes. Julia’s grief becomes laced with guilt when she realizes that her daily horoscope had predicted a calamity she’s now convinced she could have prevented. The news from Italian attorney Massimiliano Lombardi that his late client has left her millions in cash and an estate worth nearly as much again doesn’t comfort her, but it does provide distraction—especially since she’s never heard of Emilia Rossi and has no idea why she’s been chosen as her heir. Since Julia, adopted at an early age by a couple who’ve been dead for years, wonders if Emilia might have been her biological grandmother, she travels to Chianti in hope of recovering some of Emilia’s DNA. Unfortunately, caretakers Anna Mattia Vesta and Piero Fano have burned all of Emilia’s clothing and personal items on her orders, so there’s nothing left to test. Growing convinced that the stars are directing her and that her history is rooted in Emilia’s decrepit house, Julia turns down repeated offers for the property and resolves to secure evidence confirming the relationship between Emilia and her. Now all she has to do is protect herself from the shadowy figures tracking and following her and recover from a series of vivid, hallucinatory nightmares that seem to be the cost of claiming her heritage.
