A New Jersey cat fancier tussles with mysteries at both ends of the socio-economic spectrum.
As the owner of the cat boutique and boarding business Cassie’s Comfy Cats, Cassie McGlone would’ve thought she’d been around a lot of cats, but her life is nothing compared to that of Bernice and Chester Tillman. The Tillmans are a needy older couple Cassie’s employee, Sarah Wilcox, is helping through her church. When Cassie and Sarah come to the Tillmans’ place, it’s not even clear how many cats there are inside and out, and cats aren’t the only thing the sweet couple has too much of. Vintage video games, records, and all manner of stuff fill the place. But in spite of the mess, the couple are happy as long as they have their cats and each other. On the opposite end of the spectrum is Cassie’s newest client, Gillian Foster, who’s boarding her purebred Himalayan, Leya, while she restores her mid-19th-century house to its former glory, much to the dismay of her husband and teen daughter. Gillian’s as obsessed with making everything just so as the Tillmans are with not letting go of anything. Tragedy strikes the Tillmans when Bernice dies unexpectedly overnight, and Chester’s habit of propping the back door open for outdoor cats raises the possibility of foul play. Luckily, Cassie has a friend in Detective Angela Bonelli, of the Chadwick PD, who’s willing to investigate when the Tillmans’ local officers won’t. Meanwhile, Gillian has a mystery of her own when a gluten-free guest is apparently poisoned by flour at a gathering Cassie attends. Will two mysteries be too much for Cassie to handle?

When a well-liked endodontist and part-time rocker is murdered, a small-town librarian relies on her magical cats and her wits to solve the case.
Sure, Kathleen Paulson’s always known that Mike Bishop played in Johnny Rock and the Outlaws, but she’s never appreciated how good he is until she and her friends see a live reunion concert. It’s unbelievable that the endodontist who perfected her smile can also wail on the guitar and truly rock out. Kathleen’s boyfriend, Marcus, and her closest friend, Roma, are equally in awe. But Mike’s not one to brag, and when Kathleen runs into him after the show, he’s more interested in discussing his recent genealogical research than in projecting a rocker persona. In her librarian role, Kathleen’s been helping Mike find resources to research his Finnamore family history, and he’s finally ready to draft his family tree. Kathleen can even recommend an artist to help Mike turn his research into something beautiful. But before the transition from notes to art can get underway, Marcus calls Kathleen with some shocking information from his role as the Mayville Heights police detective: Mike is dead, and the signs point to murder. Kathleen is shocked that someone would murder Mike, who was universally liked, and feels she must discover the truth. Unlike in many other cozies, Kathleen and Marcus share information in mutual faith that one of them will solve the case. Of course, Kathleen has the advantage of Owen and Hercules, cats with magical powers that may help guide her to answers.

Sharply drawn characters, a “locked-room” location, and a tension-filled WWII setting illuminate this wartime thriller.
During World War II, a female police officer investigates a spate of murders on a tiny island off the coast of Massachusetts.
Oren’s novel opens arrestingly with a local police captain discovering a fisherman’s unexpected catch of a human body. Then, an initial assessment of death by drowning goes distinctly south when it turns out that the man was strangled. Things only get trickier from there since it’s wartime, 1944, and the corpse is that of a prisoner of war: The island, along with its docks, trawlers, and cranberry bogs, includes a prison camp of Italian POWs and a U.S. military emplacement headed by a lieutenant who’d prefer to be on the front lines (his wealthy family ensures that he’s not). To complicate matters further—especially when another murder victim emerges—the police captain is Mary Beth Swann, who took over her husband’s law enforcement role when he shipped out to the South Pacific. Being a female police officer was already challenging enough; Mary Beth, originally from Boston, also has to tolerate the disrespect of the island’s inhabitants. What elevates this intriguing story—comparisons with television’s always engaging Foyle’s War are inevitable—are the wonderfully delineated specifics of the location and characters. This island may be fictional, but it’s drawn directly from the author’s experiences on Nantucket, and each of the characters sparkles with their own vitality, including the town’s brothel madam, the Acadian short-order cook missing two fingers, a visiting gangster, and the nearly 90 Italians waiting out the war in a remote corner of a foreign land.
