This time the pig in a wig finds herself conducting an orchestra. Humor is the order of the day as the various animals—raccoon, dog, bird, cow, cat—assemble to play the instruments. At first, the pig is alone on the bandstand, but her musical friends soon join in on a wide assortment of instruments: banjo, bells, bass, trombone, bugle, kazoo, and drum. When a little, tuba-playing mouse joins in with a squeak, the whole band goes crazy! It’s not clear why all the animals are unnerved by the mouse, but they certainly are. Feeling more like a choppy phonics textbook than a story, the book doesn’t give readers enough to make it worth the work to read. While each traditional sound word (“buzz,” “jingle”) could be decoded by beginning readers, Virján includes so many nonsense words (including “tootle,” “brup,” “tish,” and “bwap”) in her text—often they are the only words on a page—that young readers may lose interest along the way. Parents and teachers who will be called upon to help young readers sound out the “words” will quickly tire of the chore. Followers of the series will enjoy another go-around with this familiar character, but the plot does not hold up to its predecessors.

The book’s simplicity guarantees achievement for beginning readers.

Two kids, probably siblings, explore their surrounding world through magnification.

While the older one remains inside with a microscope, the younger prefers the outside, examining all with a large hand-held magnifying glass. “I see,” the kid declares, focusing on several insects and animals while peering through the glass. A large, blue-black ant grins up through the glass as the child states, “I see an ant.” A butterfly, a snail, and robins’ eggs similarly appear through the glass, all narrated in the short, patterned text. Arriving home with discoveries crawling and flapping behind, the explorer now declares, “We see,” to the older child. The minimalist text is perfect for emerging readers, allowing children the ability to successfully read a whole book. Each repetitive sentence with its additional new word is coupled with recognizable picture cues to help in decoding. Cepeda’s characteristically energetic artwork offers sharp-edged, jagged lines that give it a scratch-art look. The siblings are dressed nearly identically, in blue shorts and red polo shirts, and they have tousled brown hair, beige skin, and big smiles.

Animals with differing internal rhythms find it challenging to be neighbors in this nocturnal tale.

Duck is full of energy; sitting in his brightly lit, yellow kitchen, he sips coffee while perusing 101 Ways to Stay Awake. Bear, by contrast, stands sleepily at the base of the staircase in his dimly lit living room, stuffed rabbit dangling from one massive paw. Just after Bear climbs the steps and settles in, Duck raps on the door, wide awake. "Wanna play cards?…Watch a movie?…Start a band?…Make smoothies?" To each suggestion, Bear simply says “No.” This pattern plays out three times, each episode ending with one or the other voicing the titular refrain until the beleaguered bear is finally wide awake, and the duck drifts off. The relationship between a lumbering, grumpy character and a frenetic extrovert will be familiar to grown-up fans of cartoons, and Duck’s ludicrous behavior and costumes will no doubt elicit giggles from young listeners. Davies brings an animator’s sensibility to his uncluttered compositions; variation in page color and typeface as well as skillful manipulation of facial features signal emotional states. The texture of the hairy bear and the occasional patterns on the floor and bedspread add interest to the flat backgrounds.

That’s all, though, folks. With its one-joke plot and dramatic potential, it’s better suited to school and library use than repeat readings in a lap at home. (Picture book. 3-6)
