Donald Langham and his French wife, Maria, are in the middle of buying a cottage in Suffolk when Maria arrives at the office with a bizarre invitation to attend a death at the home of Maxwell Falwell Fenton. When she was just 18, Maria was infatuated with the much older artist until he asked her to pose nude and she fought him off with a poker. The couple drive to Fenton’s crumbling estate to find that actress Holly Beckwith, George Goudge and his art critic wife, Hermione, poet Crispin Proudfoot, and Dr. Bryce are fellow invitees. Greeted by a butler, they each take numbered seats and are allowed to see Fenton, who is dying and almost unrecognizable. After excoriating and threatening them, he shoots himself. It seems like a simple suicide until the guests begin to be murdered in horrific ways in the order of their seat numbers. A call from DI Mallory, who finds the hanging death of Dr. Bryce fishy, involves Langham and Ralph Ryland, the partner in his detective agency, in a grim effort to halt the slaughter. As each guest is killed, Langham tries to protect the survivors while digging into Fenton’s thoroughly reprehensible past for clues.

A fudge-making, hotel-owning bride-to-be obsesses about wedding plans but never imagines murder will be involved.
Two weeks before her marriage to Mackinac Island lead police officer Rex Manning, Allie McMurphy’s still reading wedding books and magazines. That’s why she overhears Velma French and Myrtle Bautita’s tiff at the library over some craft books. Leaving the library, she finds Myrtle crying over the body of Velma, who’s been bludgeoned to death with a rock; when Velma’s ex-husband suddenly appears from around the corner of the building, he accuses Myrtle of the crime and kicks the rock into the nearby lake. Other witnesses might be distraught, but Allie, who’s had plenty of experience with murder, is more anxious about dealing with her mother, who’s arrived early with her own plans for the wedding. Allie and her best friend, Jenn, a wedding planner, have planned a large outdoor event with a charmingly simple wedding dress, but Allie’s wealthy mother wants a smaller wedding restricted to close friends and relatives at the island’s fanciest hotel and an extravagant gown for Allie. Furious with her mother and the snobbish relatives who arrived early, Allie tries to placate them by agreeing to hair and makeup appointments and wearing the expensive dresses on offer. Luckily, gathering her book club friends to help find the killer takes her mind off her real problems, and her dog, Mal, helps her uncover several clues. Every day brings a new fight with her mother, and her never having met Rex’s relatives turns out to be a major last-minute problem at the wedding, which almost doesn’t take place.

A weird tale of crime without punishment.
The return of a deadbeat dad throws a Downeast Maine town into a tizzy.
Hayley Jordan’s father, Dwight, took off from Salmon Cove when she was just a girl, leaving her mother to raise Hayley and her brother, Randy, with no support. Hayley’s best friend Mona’s father, Bubba, stuck around to raise his family, satisfying his need for adventure with a yearly solo ice-fishing trip. But this year, Bubba’s forgotten his blood pressure medication, and when Mona and Hayley drive out to bring it, they get the shock of their lives: Bubba’s excursion isn’t a one-man jaunt after all. For the past few years, he’s invited his old friend Elmer Crawford—the amicably divorced dad of Hayley and Mona’s third best friend, Liddy—and Dwight Jordan, who is kinda-sorta hoping to worm his way back into the bosom of Salmon Cove society. None of these players are spring chickens (Hayley just had her first grandchild), but they react to Dwight’s surprising return the way a bunch of middle schoolers would treat a new kid in town. Some folks see him as the flavor of the month; others are still stung by the way he mistreated them before he left. After a lot of bickering and side-choosing, the stakes go way up when people start getting killed. Carroll Flood is poisoned shortly after losing the town’s gingerbread house contest to Dwight. Then someone starts taking potshots at Dwight. There’s no dearth of suspects who might want to harm him: Hayley assembles a list of more than 100 people he’s hurt. Though ultimately Hayley cracks the case, the biggest mystery is why folks remain so enamored of someone who has done nothing but harm his whole life.
