THE INK DRINKER

The story of an ink-drinking vampire, and the boy who discovers his nefarious behavior. The nameless boy who narrates is the son of a bibliophile and bookstore owner. The boy isn’t much of a reader (“I guess I do like the sound of paper being torn. It’s like music to my ears”) and welcomes shoplifters, but he has been dragooned into helping at the shop during his summer vacation. He spies on the customers, one of whom is a strange-looking gent who inserts a straw into a book and starts sipping; when the boy later opens the book, the pages are blank. The boy confronts the ghoul in his coffin; the vampire is allergic to blood, and ink is all he can digest—“Bottled ink is as bland as salt-free food. But ink that has been aged on paper, well, it’s the ultimate gourmet dish. Simply sublime.” There’s the intimated nip in the boy’s neck, and he becomes a book fiend just like his father, albeit with different tastes. Sanvoisin’s tale is funny and hip, written with gathering suspense; it’s a cut above most fare for emerging readers, and plays mildly to their sense of the macabre. Matje’s inspired, eccentric illustrations recall the styles of Tomi Ungerer and Edward Gorey. (Fiction. 7-10)

A gently whimsical rumination about compromise and friendship.

Stormy waters await two friends on the high seas.

In this follow-up to Kondo & Kezumi Visit Giant Island (2020), best pals Kondo and Kezumi are back in their tiny boat, sailing toward new adventures. Kondo wants to stick with their plans to visit Spaghetti Island, but Kezumi is easily distracted by nearby wonders. Her curiosity piqued, she longs to follow schools of carrot-colored, long-eared sea jumpers bounding out of the water and to explore a mysterious rusty ship. Kondo, however, is frustrated by Kezumi’s constant diversions, wishing to stay on course. When the duo shipwrecks on a strange new island, their tensions come to a head, and each stomps off angrily in opposite directions. Kezumi finds an immense broken warning bell and wants to fix it but cannot move it without Kondo’s help; will they be able to reconcile and work together? Adhering to stereotypes, Kondo, the yellow male character, is markedly larger and stockier than female Kezumi, who is orange, frilled, and slight. This quibble aside, Goodner and Tsurumi’s tale offers many alluringly adorable two-page illustrated spreads, with text divided into readably short chapters. The pacing pulls readers along like a swift current, and worldbuilding is playful and unexpected, dialing up the imagination and creating a new dimension for this tried-and-true friendship tale.

Eeney meeney miney moe, catch this series before it goes! (Adventure. 7-9)

Two kids get up close and personal with some great works of art in this first in a new series.

Tiger Brooks is used to his little sister’s fantastical stories. So when the top-hatted orange pig she describes turns out to be not only real, but a next-door neighbor, Tiger enlists the help of his kooky new friend, Luna, to investigate. It turns out the pig works for the reclusive painter Viola Dots. Years ago a magical picture frame swallowed up her only son, and she’s searched for him in artworks ever since. When Tiger’s tinkering starts the magic up again, he and Luna are sucked into a reproduction of Henri Rousseau’s Surprised! or Tiger in a Tropical Storm, hungry predator and all. After meeting and failing to rescue Viola’s son in this adventure, the series is set up for the intrepid pair to infiltrate other classic paintings in the future. Backmatter provides information on the real Rousseau and his life. Oliver keeps the plot itself snappy and peppy. While there are few surprises, there’s also an impressive lack of lag time. This is helped in no small part by Kallis’ art, which goes from pen-and-ink drawings to full-blown color images once the kids cross over into the painting. Tiger is a white boy, and Luna is a dark-haired Latina.
