A deeply delusional man who imagines he’s an elite British spy is once again called on to save the world in this sequel.
In Orkin’s previous novel, You Only Live Once (2018), James Flynn believed, against all evidence and reason, that he was an agent in the British secret service with a “Double-0 designation.” He managed to foil a plot by the ruthless gangster Francisco Goolardo to kidnap the 10 richest men in the world, but the media attention that ensued hobbled James psychologically. Now, he’s a 37-year-old man reduced to living in a “halfway house for the mentally ill,” taking heavy medication, and working at a hot dog shop while routinely being humiliated by teenagers. But when Goolardo and his henchman Mendoza escape from prison and attempt to murder James for the sake of revenge, he snaps back into “the old Flynn, the masterful one, with the deep voice and the British accent with just a touch of Scottish burr.” He’s recruited by Sergei Belenki, the “high-tech billionaire” who founded Blinky Social Network, to help stop damaging information leaks likely coordinated by Russia. But in the process, James discovers that Belenki is the real danger to be thwarted. The author reprises not only James’ lead role, but also the preceding novel’s plot structure—the intrepid hero must save the world from yet another diabolical plan, assisted by his trusty sidekick, Sancho. Orkin can be hilariously inventive, and James is a memorable protagonist—simultaneously sane and bonkers, diffident and brave. But the frantic pace of the humor—the silliness is delivered relentlessly, one joke on the heels of another—can be a bit exhausting. For readers in search of ceaseless slapstick humor without a moment of reprieve, this book will fill the bill.

Escape to the lakefront with this entertaining romance.
A Canadian 30-something gets a second chance at love and career.
If Fern Brookbanks ever opened the Toronto espresso shop of her dreams, the first song on the playlist would be “Feeling Good” by Nina Simone. That could be the soundtrack of this upbeat, often very witty Canadian romance novel as well. Unfortunately, though, 32-year-old Fern will not be opening any espresso shops but instead must cope with managing the struggling cottage resort she's suddenly inherited on Lake Muskoka. She grew up on its grounds, and her only significant accomplishment so far in life is getting out of there. But then her mother, a 55-year-old powerhouse who's been running the place single-handedly all her adult life, dies in a car crash. Left to help poor Fern keep things going are her high school boyfriend, Jamie, and her mother's dear friend Peter, the resort's master baker, who helped raise Fern and nurtured her love of great playlists. Then Will Baxter, a handsome hunk her mother hired as a consultant to help save the hotel, turns out to be the very guy Fern had the most amazing night of her life with 10 years ago—only he broke her heart by failing to show up for their second date. Fortune fills her novel with food, music, and clothing descriptions and has some truly great one-liners: “I didn't know an apron could be sexy, but this apron is the lost Hemsworth brother of aprons.” The suspense is created by withholding information: What was Fern’s outrageous teenage transgression? What was the terrible thing she read in her mother’s diary? Why did Will stand her up 10 years ago? While this technique does feel a bit formulaic, it keeps the pages turning.

When a man accused of rape turns up dead, an Early American town seeks justice amid rumors and controversy.
Lawhon’s fifth work of historical fiction is inspired by the true story and diaries of midwife Martha Ballard of Hallowell, Maine, a character she brings to life brilliantly here. As Martha tells her patient in an opening chapter set in 1789, “You need not fear….In all my years attending women in childbirth, I have never lost a mother.” This track record grows in numerous compelling scenes of labor and delivery, particularly one in which Martha has to clean up after the mistakes of a pompous doctor educated at Harvard, one of her nemeses in a town that roils with gossip and disrespect for women’s abilities. Supposedly, the only time a midwife can testify in court is regarding paternity when a woman gives birth out of wedlock—but Martha also takes the witness stand in the rape case against a dead man named Joshua Burgess and his living friend Col. Joseph North, whose role as judge in local court proceedings has made the victim, Rebecca Foster, reluctant to make her complaint public. Further complications are numerous: North has control over the Ballard family's lease on their property; Rebecca is carrying the child of one of her rapists; Martha’s son was seen fighting with Joshua Burgess on the day of his death. Lawhon weaves all this into a richly satisfying drama that moves suspensefully between childbed, courtroom, and the banks of the Kennebec River. The undimmed romance between 40-something Martha and her husband, Ephraim, adds a racy flair to the proceedings. Knowing how rare the quality of their relationship is sharpens the intensity of Martha’s gaze as she watches the romantic lives of her grown children unfold. As she did with Nancy Wake in Code Name Hélène (2020), Lawhon creates a stirring portrait of a real-life heroine and, as in all her books, includes an endnote with detailed background.
