INDIANA BONES AND THE LOST LIBRARY

From the Indiana Bones series , Vol. 2

Another fun addition to this adventure-filled series.

Wisecracking dog Indiana Bones and his spirited young human sidekick, Aisha Ghatak, resume their hunt for lost treasure in this lively mystery.

Indiana and his owner, Aisha, have arrived back in England in a hot air balloon following their adventure in Egypt and are eager to return home to Aisha’s father, archaeologist Dr. Satnam Ghatak. But Aisha is startled when her dad introduces them to his new friend, a blond woman named Celia Kane, whom he’s gotten very close to, leaving Aisha worried that she’ll no longer have his undivided attention. Aisha and her dad also disagree on what to do with the journal of the Lonely Avenger, an ancient book Aisha and Indiana found in Egypt that they believe will provide clues about the knight’s lost treasure. When Aisha’s father announces that he is heading to Turkey to investigate, Aisha and Indiana are sad to learn they’ll be left behind and wonder how they can solve the mystery from afar. Heape has written another fast-paced, funny mystery; Bagley’s expressive illustrations enhance the atmosphere. Returning bad guys Philip Castle and Ringo continue to be outsmarted by the clever Aisha, Indiana’s one-liners are as snappy as ever, and Satnam and Celia’s side plot is heartwarming.

Another fun addition to this adventure-filled series. (Mystery. 8-12)

SIDEKICKS

From the Sidekicks series , Vol. 1

A veritable bonanza of capes, heroes and pets with superpowers abounds in illustrator Santat’s first solo graphic novel.

None Captain Amazing, the muscled hero of Metro City, is aging, and after a botched takedown of four nefarious villains, he decides he is in need of a trusty sidekick. Unbeknownst to Captain, his own pets are clamoring for the job (and for more quality time with their beloved owner). Fluffy, his hamster, has yet to discover his superpower, but this rodent has a lot of heart. Manny the cat (who has the ability to electrocute bad guys) had run away after his beloved toy Nummers went missing, but the prodigal cat returns just in time to help the Captain. Roscoe (a.k.a. Metal Mutt) has a gruff exterior but is fiercely loyal. Shifty, the newest addition to the family, is a color-changing chameleon who adds a dose of comic relief. The lovable menagerie of crime-fighting pets offers lots of laughs and a boisterous and exuberant storyline; Santat’s illustrations are clear, engaging and neatly stacked into easy-to-read panels. While there is no mention of a sequel, subsequent volumes would certainly fly off the shelf faster than a speeding bullet, so here's hoping.

THE GREEN KINGDOM

A verdant, enchanting read let down by poorly executed diverse representation.

Old riddles provide a modern girl with a summer adventure.

Caspia Turkel would rather stay in her small Maine town than spend 11 weeks (the whole summer!) in Brooklyn, even though her parents are excited about the opportunities awaiting them. Within a hand-painted dresser in their rented apartment, Caspia finds a stack of pale-green linen envelopes, tied with a velvet ribbon. The letters inside were sent in the 1950s and ’60s to a girl named Minna from her loving sister, Rosalind, and they contain a series of riddles about plants. Even though she’s never given much thought to growing things before, Caspia dives into this scavenger hunt and learns unexpected things about what Rosalind dubbed the “Green Kingdom.” She also meets amazing people on her journeys around her urban neighborhood, which includes the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. The broad range of featured plants includes many that are likely to be familiar to readers. Co-authors Hartung, who has botanical expertise, and Funke, whose original German text was translated by Anna Schmitt Funke, add magic to the mundane, collaborating to create a realistic story that nevertheless feels wonderfully fantastical. Castrillón’s delicate illustrations have an old-fashioned feel and provide marvelous atmosphere as well as effectively highlighting the various plant species. Caspia, who’s white, makes a diverse group of friends in Brooklyn, but many of their portrayals feel exoticizing and othering, marring the attempt to celebrate diversity.
